The Check Was Free. The Case Record Was Missing.

Bank bill pay can show payment status. Disbo connects each paper check to the matter, recipient, trust ledger, delivery timeline, and audit trail.

Free bank bill pay solves one narrow problem: the bank sends the payment. Chase describes its Bill Pay service as showing payment status and when money leaves the account. That is useful bank-level visibility, but it is not a legal disbursement record. It does not natively preserve which matter the check belongs to, which recipient distribution it satisfies, how it affects the client trust ledger, where the mailed item is in delivery, or whether the matter is reconciled. Law-firm staff still have to rebuild that context elsewhere.

What Bank Bill Pay Records

  • The bank can show that a payment was scheduled or sent, but the payment is not natively attached to the legal matter that authorized it
  • A payee and memo do not preserve the complete case context: client, settlement, distribution line, approval, and supporting documents
  • Check status, trust-ledger impact, and reconciliation live in separate systems or spreadsheets instead of one case record
  • When a check is delayed, returned, or remains outstanding, staff must reconstruct the payment's case context by hand

What Disbo Adds to the Case

  • Every Disbo paper check starts from a case-linked disbursement, with the matter, recipient, amount, and payment purpose recorded together
  • Lob prints and mails the check while delivery status remains visible on the same payment record
  • The client trust ledger updates with the disbursement, keeping the check's accounting impact attached to the matter
  • Payment and reconciliation status remain in the case audit trail, so the firm does not have to re-key bank activity into a separate log

This is a capability comparison, not a realized customer before-and-after. A bank can show that a payment moved; Disbo is designed to preserve why it moved, which legal matter it belongs to, who was paid, where the paper check is, and whether the trust record reconciles — all in one case-linked workflow.
