Partial and Supplemental Settlement Disbursements

A controlled workflow for documenting partial settlement disbursements, preserving reserves, and recording later supplemental payments.

Quick answer

What is a partial or supplemental disbursement?

A partial disbursement releases only the amount the firm has determined can be paid while a documented balance remains in trust. A supplemental disbursement is a later payment from that remaining balance after the relevant condition is resolved. The firm must authorize both stages and preserve a clear matter ledger.

One settlement does not always mean one payment event

A matter may have cleared funds available while a lien, cost, payee detail, or other item remains unresolved. A firm may decide, after appropriate legal and accounting review, to distribute an approved portion and hold the disputed or unresolved amount. Later, it may issue one or more supplemental payments.

The control objective is continuity. The original gross amount, every authorized payment, and the remaining matter balance should tell one coherent story. Each stage needs its own supporting calculation, approval, payment evidence, and ledger effect; staff should not overwrite the original disbursement record to make a later payment fit.

Disbo's live safeguards can support applicable portions of this process: two-person and 2FA payment approval, matter-linked payment history, continuous three-way reconciliation, integration sync, and exportable audit records. Whether a specific staged-disbursement configuration is available, and whether a partial release is appropriate, must be confirmed before use.

Exact workflow

01

Identify the unresolved amount

Document the payee or issue, the basis for the amount retained, and who is responsible for follow-up.

02

Calculate the approved release

Prepare a matter-level breakdown showing gross funds, prior activity, the proposed partial payments, and the balance remaining in trust.

03

Review and approve

A separate authorized approver checks the calculation and context and completes 2FA before applicable payments are released.

04

Preserve the remainder

Post the completed payments without closing or zeroing the matter ledger while funds remain attributable to it.

05

Resolve and supplement

When the condition is resolved, prepare a new instruction, repeat approval, issue the supplemental payment, and retain both stages in the matter history.

Safeguards in the workflow

Separate approvals

Each release should stand on its own calculation and authorization rather than inheriting an earlier approval.

Matter-level balance

Continuous three-way reconciliation helps compare the remaining client balances with the ledger and bank balance.

Unbroken history

Matter-linked records preserve the relationship between the initial and later payments.

Reviewable export

Available approvals, payments, and reconciliation evidence can be organized for audit review.

Compliance note: Disbo supports compliance and creates reviewable controls and records. It does not guarantee compliance, provide legal advice, or replace the firm's responsibility to apply governing requirements.

Where this applies

  • Matters where the firm has concluded that an approved portion may be paid while a defined amount remains unresolved.
  • Supplemental receipts or later adjustments that require another documented distribution.
  • Applicable customers after confirming the required workflow and configuration with Disbo.

Limitations to plan for

  • Disbo does not decide whether a partial payment is legally permissible or calculate what a firm must hold.
  • Do not use staged payments to bypass a dispute, lien, clearance requirement, client authorization, or firm policy.
  • Product, bank, and payment-rail support for a specific scenario must be confirmed before relying on the workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Can a law firm partially disburse a settlement?

That depends on the facts, governing requirements, resolved entitlements, and firm policy. Disbo does not make that legal determination; the firm must approve the decision.

How should a supplemental payment be recorded?

Record it as a new authorized payment tied to the same matter, with its own calculation, approval, ledger effect, and payment confirmation.

Does Disbo guarantee compliance for partial disbursements?

No. Disbo's controls support compliance and documentation but do not guarantee compliance or the permissibility of a particular release.
